Why You Should Move From Glass To Plastic Containers
Speaking strictly from an environmental point of view, people would rather prefer glass to plastic, as the former is a recyclable material. However, things aren’t that simple.
Glass isn’t always the superior alternative to plastic; as it is found to release more greenhouse gases than plastic and is generally more bulky than plastic.
Other than that, there are various other reasons why you may want to switch from glass to plastic. In this article, we have highlighted some of reasons from financial, practical and visual aspects.
Convenient Transportation
It is easier to transport products in bulk quantities when they are packaged in plastic rather than glass, as plastic is less bulky. When the overall weight of the products is lesser, it requires lesser horsepower and energy to transport.
This means the transportation costs can be lowered, along with the secondary carbon footprint.
Safer
Products packaged in plastic containers are safer as compared to the ones that are packaged in glass containers. This has several implications.
First, the risk of damage to the product is minimized as soon as the product is packaged. Second, the transportation cost of the products is also reduced as no significant safety measures are required during transit. Third, it makes loading and unloading of the product a lot easier.
Efficiency
Unlike glass, the thickness of the plastic doesn’t determine the level of durability it can provide.
This makes plastic more efficient as thinner plastic containers can be used to package more product. Similarly, thinner plastic containers can be used to store more items on the shelf, leading to more revenue per square feet for retail stores.
Lower Per Unit Cost
The packaging, of course, is an essential element in the per unit cost of the product. Since plastic is a lot cheaper compared to glass, using plastic packaging can greatly reduce costs of manufacturing one single unit.
This means the manufacturers can lower the selling price in order to increase demand for their products.
Aesthetics
There is no doubt that glass packaging looks aesthetically pleasing. However, there are many plastic containers today that look just like glass; therefore, the manufacturers don’t have to compromise on the aesthetic appeal of their products if they wish to use plastic.
This is especially true for PET bottles, which come in various colors and shapes. Their glass-like appearance, combined with metal caps, can provide a complete look at much lower cost, as compared to glass bottles.
