What to Include on Your Medical Cannabis Label

Ever since California legalized marijuana for medical use sometime back in 1996, medical marijuana has become talk of the town and remains, to this day, one of the most earnestly sought products. Now legally approved in some 33 states, medical marijuana grows as an industry and looks like a promising avenue for business growth. Said industry has seen a significant rise since 2017, and is expected to rope in some $7.3 billion U.S. dollars by 2020.

Being such a budding industry, there’s naturally great competition in the CBD universe. In order to ensure that one stays ahead of everyone else in the market, clever marketing strategies need to be devised.

Packaging for a cannabis infused product is a tricky job. It needs to be aesthetically appealing, clean cut but fun-looking, informative and guaranteeing safety. All of this goes a long way in ensuring customer satisfaction and building trust, which is a requisite in this industry.

Here are things that you need to mention on your cannabis labels. And here’s the ultimate list:

The Dates of Harvest

When was the plant harvested? This is important to know since THC becomes less and less potent as the time passes, and the flowers are prone to become drier as they age. It is thus best to ensure that your customers are not buying any product that has surpassed the harvest date. They will eventually have a dissatisfactory experience which will in turn lead them to think that your products in general and the brand as a whole are not trustworthy.

Quantity

People don’t have scanning and calculating powers embedded in their eyes, and they need to know how much flower they’ve bought. The density of the buds goes a long way in deciding how large or small a dried flower gram is. The size—usually in milligrams—helps customers and reassures them. It is specifically helpful if they have specific needs.

The Percentages

People who use cannabinoid products usually know how their bodies react to the compound, and actively look for the cannabinoid percentages on the packaging. Always list the percentages of THC and CBD. If there are other cannabinoids that you have included in the product, mention those too along with their percentages. Bear in mind that most people are unaware that over 113 cannabinoids exist in the cannabis plant. The onus of explanation lies on you.

The Terpene Profile

It is the terpene profile in the cannabis profile that determines how “high” a person might get. It is also the terpenes that help determine the flavor and aroma of the flower. The citrus or sweet notes in the strains are all courtesy of its terpene profile. Mentioning the terpene profile helps customers better identify if the product is compatible with their preferences.

Pesticides

People are always concerned if the product they’re using for medical purposes has pesticides or not—most high end CBD brands are pesticide-free. This needs to be mentioned on the label in order to ensure complete transparency with your customers. If you have used pesticides, make sure you mention which ones.

Unified Business Identifier

The Unified Business Identifier—or UBI—mean you’re required to mention the name of the producer, the retailer, and the lab where the product was tested. You will also need to mention where the product was processed. Mentioning these particulars is a legal requirement in a few states. However, even if it isn’t a legal requirement in the state where you are based, it is best to mention the particulars of the UBI. It solidifies trust and transparency, and metes out authenticity to your brand.
