The Resin-Packed World: Polyethylene Terephthalate Packaging Basics
We live in a resin-packed world. Our foods, our medicines, the equipment we use, everything comes packaged in resins.
Even resins come packaged in resins!
When we talk about resin packaging, the type of resin packaging that most certainly stands out from its resin brothers, is polyethylene terephthalate packaging.
Poly—WHAT?!
Poleee…e…thigh…lean…ter…ep…thal…ate packaging!
Simple.
Or let’s make it simpler – PET packaging!
Ahh, that’s much better!
So what actually is PET and what makes it the darling pet in the packaging world?
What is PET?
PET is a synthetic resin produced by the polymerization of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol. It’s a member of the polyester family of polymers.
PET can be formed and molded into a number of packaging solutions, including disposable beverage bottles, plastic food containers, clothing packaging sheets and so much more.
The best thing about it…
It’s 100% recyclable.
Who says plastic can ONLY be BAD for the environment? *A Plastic Wink*
But what does it look like?
Oh, we are sure you have come across PET packaging many times in your life.
Remember that water bottle you threw in the trash can earlier?
Those bottles of ketchup you find at fast food restaurants?
They are all made from PET.
What’s So Good About PET Packaging?
First and foremost, it’s recyclable… something we touched on earlier.
But it’s not the only good thing about PET packaging.
It Has A Crystal-Clear Appearance
PET packaging has a crystal-clear appearance so it can be used as a substitute for glass packaging, all the while costing cheaper. This doesn’t mean though you can’t enjoy colorful packaging in PET.
It is pure
PET packaging complies with the FDA and EU Framework Regulations designed for food packaging. This means your food products remain safe, fresh and healthy inside a PET packaging.
It Is Tough And Durable
PET packaging does not break easily; it is virtually indestructible.
It Provides A Good Barrier Against Elements
PET packaging is nearly impermeable to oxygen, carbon dioxide and moisture. These characteristics are vital for maintaining product integrity.
It Offers Good Chemical Resistance
PET packaging offers excellent resistance to mineral oils, solvents, acids and chemicals. The only exception being the bases.
It Is Lightweight
PET packaging is light to carry and light to transport. What else do you need in a packaging?
It Offers Design Flexibility
Last, but not the least, PET packaging offers great design flexibility. You can form containers of all shapes, sizes, designs and neck finishes with PET.
