The Basics of Fluorination

Are you looking for a container that can hold all kinds of ingredients like strong chemicals? The problem with these materials is that they can permeate the container and damage the product.

You can avoid all of these issues by opting for a process known as Fluorination.

What Is Fluorination?

Fluorination is the process in which the focus is on minimizing the distortion of the container. This is done by treating the internal as well as the external part of the container with Fluorine gas.

The gas creates a barrier and prevents the container’s size and shape from changing. This process can be performed either during the manufacturing process or after it.

In majority of cases, problems with the bottles arise when they collapse or sink inwards. The term used to describe this problem is Paneling. A change in the air pressure is the main culprit in these cases.

You do not have to worry about any of these issues with Fluorination.

How Is Fluorination Performed?

Fluorination is performed to increase the adhesive qualities of plastic and to increase the barrier properties of the container.

The plastic containers are placed in a steel bin, loaded in a container, and then exposed to Fluorine gas. Exposure to the gas results in the creation of Carbon Fluorine bonding both inside and outside the affected area.

As a result, the pores in plastic walls are sealed. This prevents chemicals from entering the container.

Overall, there are nine separate levels of Fluorination. Higher levels are used for contaminants that are more aggressive and they also offer a greater protection. All the levels differ from one another due to certain factors, which include:

Time: For how long was the container placed in the reactor?

Pressure: The amount of pressure used in the chamber

Temperature: How high was the temperature in the steel container?

What Are The Products On Which Fluorination Is Used?

Fluorination can be used on different kinds of products. These include:

  • HDPE
  • LDPE
  • PP

This process can be used on any product, which is susceptible to paneling. Examples of these products include:

  • Solvents
  • Automotive products
  • Paint thinners

If you want your products to last for a long time, this is the product that you need to go for. Not only does it ensure longevity, it also makes sure that there is no loss of content or flavor and discoloration.
