Regulations Related To Child Packaging That You Should Know About

We all can agree that young kids can be a handful. A major problem that parents face is that their children often ingest hazardous materials, which may lead to serious health problems. In some cases, they can be fatal as well. This is why child-resistant packaging is so important.

Also known as, special packaging, the entire purpose of child-resistant packaging is to make it difficult for kids below the ages of 5 to easily open it.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission is responsible for regulating it and they do so under the guidelines provided by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act. Let’s take a look at some of the regulations related to this form of packaging:

What Kind Of Products Require Child-Resistant Packaging?

Some of the products that require child-resistant packaging include aspirin, mouthwash, naproxen, ibuprofen, and all kinds of drugs that consist of iron. In addition to that, dietary supplements, too, require child-resistant packaging.

How to Determine If The Product Is Child-Resistant?

In the testing phase, a panel of fifty children is selected. All of these children are separated into three segments based on their ages. They are provided ten minutes during which they asked to open the package.

They are also allowed to use their teeth in order to do so. If the children are unable to open the package within ten minutes then the packaging is considered to be child-resistant.

How to Determine If The Product Is Senior-Friendly?

The tests are not just limited to children. They also include adults. Overall, around 100 adults are included in the process. Each of them is given five minutes in which they are expected to try and open the package.

In case they are unable to do so, they are provided non-child resistant packages, which they are required to open in a minute. The test is considered successful if around 90% of adults are able to open the packages.

Factors That Need To Be Considered

There are certain factors that need to be considered during the entire process. These include determining if the standards are reasonable or not, the nature of the substance, the data available, and the manufacturing practices in different industries.
