Plastic Packaging—Is It Really Worth The Risk?

Plastic packaging is the top choice of many retailers, simply because it’s cheaper than alternatives, extremely durable, and versatile.

Unlike glass, it’s not fragile and can easily stack on top of other plastic containers without damaging internal contents. It is also very light, which makes it much easier to transport it over long distances with minimal effort. It’s extremely long lifespan also makes it a prime contender for long-term storage, especially when it comes to food.

However, as amazing as plastic packaging is, it does come with a few risks. Let’s highlight some of the reasons why you might want to reconsider it.

Animals Are Dying!

On an annual basis, we throw about 8 million tons of plastic into our oceans, which can either choke or trap animals, or even end up in their stomachs, which will lead to a very painful demise. This is because plastic is virtually indestructible and takes years to decompose naturally.

Burning plastic is not the answer either, since it releases extremely harmful chemicals into the atmosphere which can damage not only living organisms, but also the environment.

It Just Keeps Piling Up

Plastic packaging accounts for more than 40% of all plastic usage and is usually for single-use purposes where it is disposed of as soon as the packaging comes off. The uses of plastic only continue to grow, but sadly, our ability to deal with the waste is still lagging behind. In the US alone, only 9% of all plastic that had been discarded since 1950 has been recycled.

Know What Its Capable Of

The risk factor for this might not be as high or as immediate, but growing evidence shows that a very common chemical, BPA, can be found in more than 80% of teenagers. This chemical is dangerous because it can be easily ingested or even absorbed through skin contact with plastic, as it breaks down over time. It is especially more harmful to fetuses or children where it can lead to some serious health problems later on.

We at Premium Vials pride ourselves in using the highest grade of plastic that does not break down even when storing substances like essential oils, which are known for having properties for breaking down plastic. We use PET or LDPE plastic which is completely safe for use and contact with food and beverages and approved by the FDA. PET plastic is also the most recycled plastic worldwide.
