‘Oh, Honey!’—Keeping It Flavorful & Fresh
Honey has been a popular part of cuisines all across the world. Used as a sweetener in various desserts and drinks, this natural food item is lauded for its health benefits. However, for the honey to be effective and flavorful, it needs to be packaged and stored the right way.
Here’s what you need to do to make sure your product stays fresh for a long time.
Choose the Right Container
Once the honey’s harvested, it needs to be stored in an airtight container. The honey itself has low water content and needs to stay that way. This is required to ensure there’s no bacteria growth.
In order to maintain the integrity of the product, the right container must be used. Glass jars are the best option as they don’t leach chemicals like plastic bottles do, don’t distort in shape, and provide an airtight environment. Moreover, the inertness of the glass keeps the honey from oxidizing, which is common in metal containers.
Avoid Moisture
As mentioned above, honey needs to maintain its low water content to avoid the product from deteriorating.
To ensure this, make sure that you’re using an airtight seal for your honey jars. These lids can be made from PET plastic that don’t react with honey and can carefully cover the container. Moreover, make sure that the bottling isn’t done at a place where the air is moist and humid. This will prevent moisture contamination while pouring the honey into the jars.
Maintain a Consistent Temperature
While room temperature is considered to be the ideal choice for honey storage, this itself varies from place to place. The “room temperature” of your factory’s storage facility may be vastly different from that of the retail stores and customers’ homes.
Consistent temperature is imperative for the freshness of honey to persist, usually between 65–80 degrees Fahrenheit. Any temperature far below or far above this range can cause your product to “go bad.” Don’t forget to add labels to your honey jars!
Store It in the Right Place
Finally, the location matters just as much as the packaging does. To keep it away from heat and moisture, honey should be stored in a cool dry place where there isn’t direct sunlight. For instance, if your personal storage facility tends to get warm, you need to find a cooler place to store it.
Similarly, retail stores must place your products in a cool, dry area as well. Honey doesn’t need to be refrigerated, and doing so can cause it to solidify. Thus, inform your retailers about the proper storage requirements for your product so that it has a longer shelf life!
