Designing Metal Packaging for Your Product
There’s more to designing the packaging for a metal tin than just finding the right supplier to buy it from! In this post, we have the lowdown on everything you need to know about coming up with the final design for your metal packaging!
Why Design Matters for Metal Packaging
Low-cost, eco-friendly and recyclable—not to mention safe if you’re selling a perishable product—metal packaging is the best choice if you’re working on a budget, but want to make a good impression on your consumer base all the same.
To come up with the best design possible, let’s start with the basics.
Material
You’ll want a metal that can resist corrosion and rust. Tinplate and aluminum both perfectly fit this requirement, and bring their own qualities to the table. Strong and durable, and lightweight, these metals are often the material of choice for products that may be sensitive to environmental factors such as light, moisture, and bacteria.
It also helps that products like aluminum are very strong. Moreover, they’re often designed with airtight lids that bolster the product’s sustainability. With tinplate, along with its strength and durability, its flexibility also comes into play, since tinplate can be welded easily.
Shapes
Typically, metal packaging comes in round, rectangular and square shapes. However, special shapes such as triangles and octagons can also be made on special order.
Depending on consumers’ behavior and association with certain shapes, each product can be packaged in shapes that are aesthetically appealing.
For example, if you take a tin of sardines, the product is often packaged in a small, flat rectangle container, because it’s easy to handle and has become a recognizable trait.
Closure
You’ll have plenty of options, such as slips, screws, lean size-to-size as well as the common hinge. Though more popular closures for food packaging include options like twist-off caps, press-twist caps, and the standard thread cap, the aforementioned options can also be utilized, especially if you have an aluminum container that needs to keep things airtight.
Bear in mind, if you’re using tin or aluminum, you can use it to make a new closure style as well, so it’s really up to you which closure you choose.
Colors
Color psychology plays a major role in marketing. By using consumer research for your industry, you too can use an appropriately colored metal to attract positive attention.
Especially if your product banner is simplistic in nature, balancing it out by using vibrantly colored metal packaging can add life to your product and make it stand out.
