Can You Make Your Own E-Liquid?

E-cigarettes are not as bad for your health as traditional cigarettes are. They’re mostly comprised of pure nicotine salts and don’t have other poisonous substances like tar and smoke. The nicotine vapor has its own drawbacks, however, the foremost being addiction. But it certainly does less damage to your body than a traditional cigarette.

But e-cigarettes also require more effort and investment compared to traditional cigarettes. You have to regularly buy e-liquid to refill them.

If you’re tired of doing so, why not learn how to make the e-liquid yourself. You’ll learn a new skill and save yourself the money and effort of buying it over and over.

While making e-liquid at home isn’t quite easy, it’s not too difficult either. With some practice, you could make good quality e-liquid right at home. Here’s a step-by-step.

Ingredients

  • Propylene Glycol (PG)—this is the most preferred base e-liquid. It’s federally approved, odorless, colorless, and is used in a variety of other products as well. It is also used medicinally and can be injected into the body, inhaled, or applied topically.
  • Vegetable Glycerol (VG)—VG is mostly similar to PG, but different in that it’s thicker and can have many different tastes to it.
  • Distilled water—water is not really crucial for the mix, but also improves vapor production.
  • Flavor—a wide variety of flavors are available for e-juices in the market. You can choose one as per your liking.
  • Nicotine liquid—you’ll have to use diluted nicotine liquid and can try out various strengths before reaching a sweet spot. The safe range is between 8 to 24 mg.

Mixing Supplies

  • Plastic bottle with a childproof cap.
  • Syringes
  • Napkins or tissue papers
  • Pair of gloves
  • Google or face shield

The 5 Easy Steps

  1. Prepare nicotine—start somewhere in-between the safe range and then keep adding nicotine till you discover the sweet spot.
  2. Prepare flavors—Prepare the flavors by putting them in a different container, ready to be added to the mix. Make sure the flavor doesn’t exceed 10% of the total mix of the end product.
  3. Choose any blend of PG/VG, depending on your preference. The usual ratio is between 80/20 and 50/50.
  4. Mix all these components in a bottle and shake thoroughly.
  5. Steeping—you can choose to skip this if the e-liquid tastes well right after making the concoction.
