A Brief Introduction to Packaging Closures for Packaging Newbies
No matter whether you package food sauce, pharmaceuticals, body wash, automotive oils or glass cleaners, using the right closure is critical to maintaining the integrity of your product. The following post introduces you to the different types of closures available in the market.
Types of Packaging Closures
Packaging closures can be divided based on:
- The material they are made from
- The dispensing profile they have
In the first category, there are predominantly two types of packaging closures: plastic closures and metal closures.
Plastic closures can further be divided into thermoset plastic closures or thermoplastic closures. Thermoset plastic closures are designed to withstand extreme temperatures, both high and low. They are known for their durability and long life. Thermoplastic closures are best suited for packaging chemical products. They can withstand high temperatures but aren’t suitable for use in low temperature settings where they can become brittle.
Metal closures are typically paired with plastic or glass containers. Compared to plastic closures, they have a much higher temperature tolerance range. They are known for their durability and are commonly found in colors like silver, gold, black and white. They may come coated with anti-corrosive coatings to combat environmental humidity.
Let’s now take a look at the second category of closure classification and the types it entails.
Based on dispensing profile, packaging closures can either be divided into dispensing closures or non-dispensing closures.
Dispensing closures are ones that allow the product to be dispensed without removing the closure itself. Some examples of dispensing closures include trigger sprays found on homecare products, disc top caps found on shampoo bottles and glass droppers found on vials.
Non-dispensing closures require removal of the closer to dispense products. Some examples of non-dispensing closures include continuous thread caps found on mayonnaise bottles, ribbed caps found on packer bottles and lug caps found on cosmetic products.
That completes our introduction of packaging closures. We hope you found the read helpful.
