3 Things to Consider Before Selecting a Packaging Style
Is your product ready to be shipped to retailers? Don’t forget to package it the right way for a longer shelf life!
Here are three aspects to consider before deciding on a design.
Practicality
Remember how annoying it is when you need three different types of bottle-openers to unfasten a lid? Or how frustrating it is to have to look for a pair of scissors to free the contents of a package? You don’t want your customers to go through that!
Keep your packaging simple and practical. Easy-to-open bottles are much more preferable than stubborn jars. In fact, this may just be why consumers opt for a competitor’s products instead of yours. Keeping a simple yet creative approach will benefit your business more than unnecessary designs ever will.
Another smart packaging approach is using standard measurements. This is especially crucial if you’re packaging solid or liquid food items. Customers are more likely to opt for a packaging that states standard grams or milliliters than odd numbers or units.
Product Protection
You’re putting all your hard work at risk if you’re not selecting your packaging material carefully! Remember, your products will stay safe and unharmed only if you take protective packaging measures. This is especially true for food, medicine, and cosmetics, which are particularly sensitive to external factors.
How you protect your cargo depends on what it actually is. For instance, if your company manufactures chocolates, then your packaging needs are different from one that sells essential oils. The latter will require glass or PET plastic vials to keep the contents fresh and unaffected.
For chocolates, however, you need a whole other strategy. In this case, you can make use of flexible packaging options such as standup pouches and barrier bags to keep your delicacies fresh and tasteful. The plastic and aluminum packaging will protect the chocolates from excessive light, high temperatures, and of course, insect infestations.
Whatever packaging option you choose should guarantee the safety of your products. It should be able to preserve their quality and keep them in their original and intended form.
Storage and Distribution
Finally, your packaging selection should also consider product storage and distribution. You’ll most likely be supplying your products in bulk, which means you should focus on large-scale packaging solutions. If you’re in the jam manufacturing business, for example, you’ll need a large quantity of glass jars for immediate hot-pour packaging.
You’ll also need to be mindful of where and for how long you may need to store your products, and how to transport them. In the aforementioned example, the jars are the perfect solution as they can preserve the contents for a long time. The inertness of the glass protects the food from undergoing chemical reactions, and protects them from extreme temperatures. This makes it easy for jam jars to be placed in storage facilities and be easily transported to retail stores.
